Jake Break

Jake came into our lives full time in July but I didn’t officially introduce him here. So I’m taking a quick Jake Break to do just that.

Lucky Dog, Jake

Jake is a Rottweiler/Hound mix and was rescued a couple years ago by my daughter and her husband (Marj and Eric). It turns out that his original owners may have thought he was a cute little thing, but when he reached full size perhaps he overwhelmed them. Whatever the reason, he was turned out on the street to fend for himself.  A neighbor took him in. Marj and Eric met the neighbor and Jake at a dog park. Actually, Lula, their dog, made the acquaintance of Jake and they seemed to really enjoy each other. When M&E found out that the neighbor was going to take Jake to the pound the next day they didn’t blink and said they would take him.

Jake had no manners and a host of issues and M&E spent a bunch of time discovering his inner, lovable Jake. But in a household that already had two cats, a high-energy Pit/Catahoula mix and humans who were juggling jobs and school, I could see he was a handful. So I asked them if he would want to be a farm dog and got a resounding NO! They would all miss him too much and they didn’t want to abandon the twice-abandoned dog.

Then as they planned a trip east for their wedding (driving with the two dogs in a Yaris!) they gave it some more thought. We had recently lost our Chocolate Lab to old age and were thinking about what we wanted to do next.  When they visited it seemed like a perfect fit (for all of us) for Jake to stay on Lucky Dog Farm. He now spends much of the day running around helping us and gets lots of outdoor time. (He would get more except he thinks deer, bunny, mice droppings are there just for him to snack on and it makes him sick. If anybody knows how to cure a dog of this passion, let me know). Despite his fearsome appearance, he is the biggest baby in the world and would be content to be a lap dog if he could fit in a lap (he does try)!

So that’s Jake!
