Strange Doings in the Sugar Bush

Mother Nature continues to confuse and bemuse. The maple trees, at least some of them, seemed to start to bud really early. And word at the feed store was that the Amish had already tapped their trees in December. We got going with our tapping on Feb. 22 and finished soon after that with some weird sap near the end. Our pantry is not as full as it was last year.

It was such a mild winter that our rogue chicken, Pepita, never got put in the barn. She enjoyed the outdoors every day.

Now we are in ramp-digging mode and it’s our third season doing it. It is a wonderful way to start feeling the change of the seasons … even if it is a while before we’ll be eliminating the extra layers of clothing.
